When you arrive at Hong Kong’s Tung Chung Station, there’s a good chance you’re either heading to the Tai O fishing village or taking the cable car up to see the Big Buddha. So why am I here this time? Originally, I was expected to quarantine for three days due to COVID-19 policies, but upon arrival, the quarantine was canceled. I still decided to spend three days here, giving me some extra time to explore the area.
Compared to tourist attractions in Taiwan, there isn’t much to see near Tung Chung Station (let’s be honest). However, it’s close to the airport, so if you don’t feel like running around on your last (or first) day, you can take a leisurely half-day trip here.
Tung Chung Half-Day Trip Itinerary
- Citygate Outlets
- Mui Wo Fishing Village
- Hong Kong Street Market – Yat Tung Estate
There’s a huge outlet mall next to the subway station, where you can have fun shopping for sportswear and boutique brands. There’s also a small traditional fishing village a 15-minute walk away, and a renovated old Hong Kong-style market further down the road where you can experience the local life.
I would position this itinerary as a leisurely half-day trip. After all, I’m super lazy myself, and a morning itinerary that requires waking up early is just not suitable for me. Also, don’t expect too much from the tourist attractions here – a leisurely stroll is more suitable for this itinerary.

Citygate Outlets
“Citygate Outlets” is a super large outlet building that gathers more than 150 internationally renowned fashion brands. I saw several brands that have more than one store in it, and I do not know the difference between the branches.
You can choose to have lunch here, browse some of your favorite brands, and implement a strategy of thinking ahead when you encounter something you like. Then, move on to the next stop, the fishing village. Finally, come back here for dinner and bring home the goods you have been thinking about.
If you want to eat Taiwanese food, there is “Chun Shui Tang” to choose from. Secretly, the tea base they use for their bubble tea is Hong Kong’s slightly bitter tea leaves. I miss Taiwanese tea leaves very much.
I also stopped by Coach to help a friend find a bag. The bags in there are popular styles and are discounted by an extra 40-60% (depending on the season).

Mui Wo Chung Village: A simple and natural small fishing village
I got lost trying to find this fishing village and had to ask the locals. The middle-aged and elderly people were very friendly, but the young people were quite cold!
If you want to walk to the fishing village through the path marked on Google Maps, you can see a path called “Tung Chung Battery Trail” without Chinese characters. The entrance looks like a deserted forest path, and the journey takes about 10 minutes, with a small hill to climb.
After walking down the hill, you can see a sea connecting to the opposite buildings. It is very beautiful and makes your heart feel open. When you enter the entrance to the fishing village from here, you will see mudskippers and crabs. I even saw mudskippers fighting one-on-one, which was very interesting.
For those who do not like secluded routes, you can choose to walk in the direction of the fire station where more people pass by, but it is a detour. Along the way, you will pass by a hospital.
Hong Kong Street Market – Yat Tung Estate
I came across many photos shared by people on Instagram and have always wanted to see it for myself. However, upon arrival, I found that only the indoor market was open for a visit. The market has many interesting decorations, and is themed around the “Kowloon City style in the 1960s”. It opened in 2016.
The vendors inside sell similar items, and according to locals, the prices are slightly higher than in other markets.
Does the design remind you of the “Baodao Era Village” in Nantou, Taiwan, which is also an indoor retro-themed village?
If you don’t want to take photos or visit the market, you can skip this attraction.
After this stop, you can take the bus back to the outlet to continue your shopping trip, and have dinner to end this half-day tour.
For those who love shopping, you can spend the entire half-day in the shopping center.
