Top 3 A must-try special accommodations in Kinmen

At the beginning of this year (2021), my friend and I arranged a trip to the outlying islands of Taiwan, a very impromptu trip of sorts.

The most vivid memory I have of it is when I was about ten years old and my family and I joined a group trip. I remember one of the travellers feeling sick after being stung by a bee on the way and I met him at the hospital with a severe allergy.

I vaguely remember the guide always leading the group down a dark tunnel, much like an adventure in a cave, so much so that my fragmentary memories keep showing this scene of me following the backs of my family ahead of me in a dark, faintly lit underground tunnel, as if I might accidentally get lost in the very tunnel that protected the people during the war.

I can’t tell you how I felt, except that I always wanted to go back and walk that tunnel again, but at such a young age I couldn’t remember what the guide had told me, so I had no way of knowing which tunnel I had been in.

I’ve forgotten all about the accommodation, but I think it was just a cheap hotel where I could sleep, but I prefer themed hotels and special B&Bs. This time I’ve come up with a list of three B&Bs that I’d love to try when I get the chance to visit Kinmen again in the future.

The B&B I stayed at earlier in the year, Sunset Sea, was also good, and I’ll introduce it later.

In the other way, I will also choose three accommodations on other outlying islands for my wish list for future travels, for those who are interested in the islands.

Hai Yuan Zi B&B : Appreciate the calm sea in the chaotic world

• Note: Each room has a bathtub and a transparent glass bathroom

Situated on the west side of Kinmen Island where you can watch the sunset, each room has a large floor-to-ceiling window.

Unfortunately, the bathroom (including the toilet) has a large glass door and there are no curtains inside to block the view, I don’t like being watched when I take a shower or relieve, it makes me nervous.

• Note: Close to the city and only available for two people

A unique hotel with a historical background of the war in Kinmen, the rooms are designed to echo the theme, incorporating elements of the past war period into a modern and simple style.

• Price: Mid-price (1000~2000/person)
• Note: Not near the city, the old house has a toilet like a normal toilet in a home, each room has a private bathroom and does not need to be shared

For those who have never stayed in a courtyard, it is a unique experience to stay in a historical and cultural building during your trip.

Other things about Kinmen

I just remember Kinmen for its sugar, noodles, steel choppers and sorghum, but now there’s so much more to discover! If you’re ever in Kinmen, don’t forget to try the Kinmen warm beef soup, which is different from Tainan.

I thought I could do the whole island in three days, and I thought I could finish my trip in a day and a half when I went to Little Liuqiu, but the short three days in Kinmen was not enough for me to relax and wander around. The good thing is that if there is another opportunity in the future (for example, if a friend who has never been to Kinmen invites me), I will definitely say “yes!” I’ll be making arrangements to make up for the rest of my trip right away.
